When an Ignition Interlock Device Can Be Removed

When California IID Removal Becomes Possible

An ignition interlock term has a set length. California IID removal usually becomes possible only after that full term ends. Removing a device early can bring serious problems.

So it helps to know how the term is counted. It also helps to confirm the end date before scheduling removal.

How the Term Is Set

Vehicle Code section 23575.3 sets interlock terms by prior record. For example, a case with one prior carries 12 months, two priors carry 24 months and three or more carry 36 months. Injury cases carry their own terms.

The DMV records the term and the time when the device must be installed. Therefore, the DMV record is the main source for the end date.

California IID Removal and Noncompliance

Section 23575.3 says any period of noncompliance does not count toward the mandatory term. So missed service, tampering or other violations can push the end date later. Keep every service appointment to avoid that result.

The installer must also report removal or tampering to the DMV. As a result, early removal shows up quickly.

Checking the End Date

Before removal, confirm the end date with the DMV. Also ask the installer whether any reported issues could extend the term. Then schedule removal after the confirmed date.

Keep written confirmation of the date. If a dispute arises, that record helps.

After California IID Removal

Removal of the device does not by itself change other license restrictions. For instance, the person may still need a valid license and other DMV clearances. The DMV DUI page explains license steps after a DUI.

Driving outside a restriction can bring a new charge under Vehicle Code section 14601.2. So confirm the full license status before driving without the device.

Records to Keep

Save installation forms, service receipts and the removal receipt. Also keep any DMV letters about the term. Those papers help with future insurance or license questions.

The guide on California DUI IID requirements explains terms, and the article on California DUI reinstatement steps covers the rest of the license process. Ask the installer about removal fees in advance, since they often appear as a final charge.

California IID removal also connects to insurance. For example, an insurer may ask about license restrictions at renewal. So keep the removal receipt and the DMV confirmation together.

Plan for a short gap between removal and the next vehicle use. That gap gives time to confirm the DMV record shows the change.
