Installing and Servicing an Ignition Interlock Device

The Basics of IID Installation California Drivers Face

After a DUI conviction, many drivers must install an ignition interlock device. IID installation California rules set who may install the device and how often it needs service. The process also involves forms that go to the DMV.

Following each step keeps the license record accurate. Missing a step can extend the interlock term.

Choosing a Certified Provider

Vehicle Code section 23575.3 requires the device to come from a certified ignition interlock provider. The person must arrange for each vehicle they operate to have a functioning, certified device. Then the person must give the DMV proof of installation.

The section also requires a fee set by the department to cover administration. So budget for both the provider’s charges and the DMV fee.

Every Vehicle Counts

The statute defines operating to include vehicles the person does not own. As a result, a shared family car or a borrowed vehicle may need a device too. Motorcycles fall under a special rule, since the section bars riding one during the restriction until the state certifies a motorcycle device.

So list every vehicle the person might drive. Then discuss the list with the installer.

Service Every 60 Days

Section 23575.3 requires service by the installer at least once every 60 days. During service, the installer recalibrates and monitors the device. In addition, the installer must report removal, tampering or repeated maintenance failures to the DMV.

Therefore, keep every appointment. Missed service periods do not count toward the required term.

IID Installation California Costs

Device makers must offer an income based fee schedule under the same section. People with incomes near or below the federal poverty level may qualify for reduced charges. So ask for the schedule and the required income proof.

Get every price in writing. Also ask about removal fees at the end of the term.

Records and Next Steps

Keep the installation form, service receipts and any reports. Those papers help if the DMV record looks wrong. The DMV DUI page explains restriction and interlock options after a DUI.

Driving without a required device can lead to impound under Vehicle Code section 14602.6. The article on California DUI IID requirements explains terms, and the guide on IID false positive readings covers disputed results.

IID installation California appointments can book up. So schedule early, especially when a restricted license depends on proof of installation.
